UAS Program Manager

K-State Salina’s Applied Aviation seeks an Unmanned Aerial Systems Program Manager.  This position manages all activity related to Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) under the guidance of the Aviation Dept. Head.


  • Pursues research funding and business development work related at continuing and growing UAS capability at KSU and Kansas including government and sponsored research activity.  Works with department head to collect and analyze data relation to UAS Operations.
  • Gives and receives training as appropriate on UAS Systems ad designed by the Dept. Head.
  • Represents Kansas State University nationally at designated UAS forums, events, and training activities.
  • Oversees UAS Operations for Kansas State University.  Works with outside agencies to provide guidance on the safe operation of UAV’s in designated airspace.
  • Provides classroom instruction when necessary as a guest lecturer.


  • Masters of Science in Aviation or Engineering
  • UAS Management Experience
  • One (1) year demonstrated background in UAS preferably with a public institution of higher learning
  • Ability to learn and keep pace with a rapidly growing industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, computer networking and programs; and computer based systems.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player with a diverse population.
  • Must be a United States Citizen as required by the Technology Control Plan.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • FAA Private Pilot Certificate
  • Current FAA Class II Medical
  • Knowledge of Certificate Authorization Process
  • Ability to transport 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work from engineering prints, schematics and parts list.
  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends and must be able to travel.

  • Remote Control (RC) Model Aircraft Experience
  • Undergraduate Aviation or Engineering Degree
  • Technical instruction experience at the collegiate level
  • Excellent knowledge of grant preparation and management


$80,000 TO $100,000 – Depending on Qualifications (DOQ)


This is a full-time, twelve-month term position based on the continuing availability of funding.  Some evenings and weekends and travel are required.
