Engineering Technician

K-State Salina invites applications for an Engineering Technician in the Engineering Technology Department.


This position is responsible for installing, maintaining and operating, highly specialized laboratory equipment and precision tools using machine tools, and computer controlled machines.  The position also advises faculty and students on instructional and research projects, design specifications, engineering materials, and available manufacturing options; and is responsible for supervision, planning, coordinating, and reviewing the work of others in the manufacturing laboratory.  The successful candidate will need to recognize potential safety hazards in all mechanical engineering technology laboratories and will supervise or perform corrective or preventative maintenance to ensure a safe and functional laboratory environment.  Person will instruct shop personnel, undergraduate students, and graduate students in the operation of laboratory equipment, safety regulations, and appropriate procedures.  This position serves as manager for the manufacturing lab and completes other duties as directed by the Department Head.


Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a closely related field.  At least 1 year of experience in the maintenance, installation, and operation of highly specialized laboratory equipment and precision tools using machine tools(e.g. metal lathe, milling machine, precision metal cutting and shearing), and computer controlled machines (e.g. CNC Vertical Mill, CNC Plasma Table).  Experience in standard manufacturing shop practices and equipment.  Experience in the use of CAD and CAM software (e.g. SolidWorks, EdgeCam) in the design and manufacture of products. Must be able to work with minimum supervision.  Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate well with faculty, students, and outside organizations which supply equipment components.   Must be able to work effectively in teams with diverse individuals.  Needs to be able to lift at least 50 lbs. and be able to work in a standing position.  Must be able to work some nights and weekends for campus events. 


At least 1 year of experience in state-of-the-art automated systems (e.g. industrial robots, vision systems, conveying systems).  Knowledge of material properties and selection of materials used in manufacturing.  Experience in CNC and/or PLC programming, Knowledge in welding methods and techniques.


$35,000-$40,000 dependent upon qualifications.
